The Republican-fascist movement that is laying siege to American democracy and society is not composed of geniuses or uniquely gifted seers. A form of path dependency is setting in, whereby at almost every key decision point Democratic leadership, the country's elites as a group, the press and even the American people as a whole are making the wrong choices. America is trapped in a democracy doom loop.
